Cervical Strain (Neck Strain)

Overview

When you overuse your neck muscles repeatedly, chronic pain can develop. Neck muscles can be strained from poor posture – whether it’s leaning into your computer at work or hunching over your workbench at home. Even minor activities such as reading in bed or grinding your teeth can strain neck muscles.

Risks
  • Poor posture
  • Occupation

All strains, no matter where they are located in the body, are treated in a similar manner. Neck strains, like other strains, will usually heal gradually, given time and appropriate treatment, which include:

  • Therapeutic soft tissue techniques
  • Therapeutic exercises (strengthening, stretching)
  • Education about body mechanics and posture to minimize strain on the neck and prevent future occurrences
